First up in the digital bibliography: Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. It's a popular source of inspirations for songwriters. Here are just a few examples of songs that reference Alice, the White Rabbit, and others.
"Alice in Wonderland" - Lisa Mitchell
The title is obviously a reference. The lyrics also reference the book.
"White Rabbit" - Jefferson Airplane
Another pretty clear reference to Alice.
"Wondaland" - Janelle Monae
The words are a little hard to understand in this one, so here are the relevant lyrics:
"Early late at night
I wander off into a land
You can go, but you mustn't tell a soul
There's a world inside
Where dreamers meet each other
Once you go it's hard to come back"
"Country Song" - Pink Floyd
The alternate title for this track is "The Red Queen Theme." It mentions the Red Queen and some other court members, as well as a White King. Some lyrics:
"And the red Queen was waiting for the news
For the white King to move
And the balance hung upon the head of one who tried
To stay within the shadows
And keep his undercover secret tight"
"Heads Will Roll" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
This song is pretty catchy. The reference to the Red Queen/Queen of Hearts is clear from the title, and the first line "Off with you head." Other Alice-related lines include "Looking glass, take the past/ close your eyes, you realize." I also really like the singer's space-age Queen of Hearts costume in the video. I don't have any explanation for the werewolf in the video, but he's a good dancer! I also like the glitter blood at the end. It's just funny to me.
"C'Mon" - Panic! at the Disco & fun.
This is probably my favorite of the bunch, since I like songs by both of the bands involved in this collaboration. Falling is mentioned throughout the song. Here are the related lyrics:
"Feels like I am falling down a rabbit hole
Falling for forever, wonderfully wandering alone"
Let me know if you know any more Alice songs! There are a lot out there.
Hi! Gina Boldman directed me your way and said you were looking for songs with references to children's literature. If you want more Alice songs, check out the Almost Alice soundtrack, which is sort of a companion sdtk to the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movie. http://www.amazon.com/Almost-Alice-Various-Artists/dp/B00342VGSG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329428986&sr=8-1
ReplyDeleteIf you're looking for fairy tale songs, here are a few:
Bowling for Soup, "Little Red Riding Hood"
Emilie Autumn, "Rose Red" and "Rapunzel"
While I've never heard this song before, I found a mention of a song called "Prince Caspian" by Phish.
Hope that helps!
Allison
Thanks for all of the suggestions, Allison! :)
